Law Enforcement Career
I began my career in Law Enforcement in 1981 with the Slocomb Police Department. I graduated from the Southwest Alabama Police Academy in 1982 while working with the Geneva Police Department. In April of 1986 I began working with the Geneva County Sheriff's Office and have been employed there ever since. While with the Geneva County Sheriff's Office I served as a Road Deputy, Commander of the Geneva County Drug Task Force, Violent Crime Investigator and as Chief Deputy. I am currently serving as your Geneva County Sheriff and have been since 2015.
Since graduating the academy I have continued attending schools and seminars to advance my law enforcement knowledge, so that I can better serve the citizens of Geneva County. These schools include the following: DEA Basic Narcotics, Clandestine Lab, Lab and Site Safety, NRA Firearms Instructor, FBI Firearms Instructor, Patrol Rifle and Sub-Gun Instructor, 120 hours of Tactical Firearms , DARE Instructor, Courtroom and Executive Security and countless other law enforcement schools. The most recent includes the National Sheriff’s Academy on Leadership in Colorado and an ongoing Leadership class of over 80 hours so far in conjunction with Jacksonville State University and The Alabama Sheriff’s Association.
I am a 1977 Graduate of Geneva High School in Geneva, AL. I am married to Frannie Gomez Helms. We have four children and six grandchildren, all living in Geneva County. Frannie and I attend church in Geneva and love our church family. We both support our military with several of our family members having served, and our oldest grandson is currently serving. Since 1986, when I started with the Sheriff’s Office, I knew what my calling was. I never left the people of Geneva County, and I remain dedicated to serving honestly, fairly and equally today and tomorrow!

More About Tony

I was raised during a time that we had heroes. The first was my dad who taught me to treat people like you want to be treated, and we were no better or worse than anyone else. He told me if I wanted anything I would have to earn it. My movie heroes were men like John Wayne. He was always the good guy, tough but fair.

My interests include fishing when I have time, shooting when I have extra ammo, and working out at the gym when I can. Mountain Men and The Last Alaskans are two of my favorite television shows which accompany all the old westerns with John Wayne. Among my favorite books are A Time To Kill by John Grisham and Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.
