 Don't Be a Victim

Shortly after I took office and after considerable thought and soul searching, I wrote a letter to you, the Citizens of Geneva County (Original Article). I explained that Geneva County is a county of over 575 square miles. About 50 square miles are made up of four cities with four police departments. The approximately 525 square miles that remain are left for the Sheriff to cover. I informed you that the national average for response time is about eleven minutes. Folks that’s a long time when you need help. Depending on where a Deputy is located and where you are, it could be 20-30 minutes before a Deputy arrives on the scene. I am sorry, but unfortunately that is reality unless I could double my force. Knowing this, I urged you at that time to legally arm yourselves, obtain a permit to carry, and train. Soon after, several other Sheriffs followed suit and urged their Citizens to arm themselves.

I know that everyone isn’t willing or may not be comfortable with carrying a firearm, and that’s perfectly okay. Baseball bats, pepper spray, tasers, stun guns, or other devices may be reasonable alternatives. In fact, I recently sponsored a class which helped teach Citizens to just use their hands, legs, and feet. A great instructor, Lennis Darby, instructed both men and women on how to do this, and it seemed to be well received. Either way folks, I urge you not to be a victim. Be responsible for what goes on in your life and vigilant of the happenings around you.

If you do decide a firearm is right for your circumstances, whether it be a pistol, shotgun, or rifle, please train with it. A gun is a tool. If you don’t know how to use it safely, it could end up being the worst decision you make to use it. To help bridge this gap, we are having a free firearms class on April 14 at 8 a.m. at the Geneva County Farm Center. This class will cover learning parts of the gun, safe handling of firearms, ammunition choices, proper storage of your firearm and ammunition, and civil and criminal liability issues. A range day will be included the following weekend.  Certified firearms instructors and range safety officers will teach this class.

Thanks for your time and have a blessed Sunday,
