We Can't Teach That Part

Last week we taught a gun class which covered the fundamentals of firearm safety, the proper way to carry a weapon, concealment versus open carry, criminal and civil liability, and when it’s proper for you to use your weapon in defense of yourself or others. Yesterday we took our students out to the range with their weapons. Throughout the morning we gave them pointers and helped them become better shooters overall. There were some great shooters, and hopefully they learned the fundamentals of proper use in the process.

We tell people when they get a permit that you know in your head the legal liability. You understand the law, but then you must be able to, in your heart, pull that trigger and live with that decision. Everyone isn’t cutout for that part. It’s difficult for anyone to think that they may have to pull the trigger for the protection of themselves or others one day. Thinking about a mama bear protecting her cubs, not everyone has that ability at any given time due to a variety of reasons. We may say that we can do it, but in the heat of the moment, the ability to do so can escape anyone. Unfortunately, we can’t teach that part. The only thing I can tell you is what John Wayne said. “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.”

Y’all have a good day,
